About Us

Run by local tennis coaches Michael Millar and Finn Mclean, Edinburgh Tennis aims to offer tennis coaching to children and adults of all ages and abilities.

The programme operates with the belief that, as career tennis coaches, Michael and Finn's combined knowledge, drive for player improvement and passion to develop the sport along with pre-established links to other clubs and governing bodies results in an unbeatable experience for tennis players.

As would be expected, all coaches and assistants who deliver tennis lessons for Edinburgh Tennis are LTA Accredited, hold relevant coaching qualifications, are first aid trained and Disclosure Scotland checked as a minimum.

Michael Millar

Michael was first introduced to tennis when he was four years old. He played, trained and competed until he left school aged sixteen to start businesses unrelated to tennis.

He came back to the sport in 2008 and obtained his first LTA coaching qualification which led to him working in tennis on a part time basis.

In late 2014, Michael gave up his 'day job' and began to work in tennis coaching and development on a full time basis.

Listed below are some key points of Michael's coaching career.

2015

Michael began working with around fifty junior tennis players every week as part of a local authority programme at Craiglockhart Tennis Centre and The Meadows. A good number of those players are still playing and now compete at club, county and national level or in university teams.

2016

Michael founded the Advantage programme in partnership with Tennis Scotland. The purpose of the programme was to provide better opportunities to people who experience barriers of entry to tennis and promote the options available to players living with disabilities throughout Edinburgh and the Lothians.

2017

Michael began working individually with a junior wheelchair tennis player who would reach an ITF world ranking of five and represent Great Britain. This involved travelling to national and international tournaments including to France for Le Petit As which is widely regarded as a 'junior grand slam'.

2017

Michael began working at Merchiston Castle School's Tennis Academy which has consistently been ranked as the LTA's number one tennis school. His role there includes managing a group of up to thirty boys, working individually with the players, running squad sessions and organising tournament opportunities.

2019

Michael founded Nursery Tennis, a programme which focuses on bringing tennis, along with fundamental movement and motor skills, directly to nurseries and pre-school education settings.

2020

Michael created a virtual tennis challenge for players in Edinburgh which raised £1000 for the Edinburgh & Lothians Health Foundation and a local food bank during the coronavirus pandemic.

2020

Lothian Disability Sport chose Michael as their Coach of the Year 2020 in relation to his work in disability tennis and the Advantage programme.

2022

Tennis Scotland invites Michael to join their 10U Performance Coach Programme due to his coaching and development of some of the top junior players in Edinburgh.
