Michael Millar

Michael was first introduced to tennis when he was four years old. He played, trained and competed until he left school aged sixteen to start unrelated businesses in the internet commerce, travel and logistics industries.

He came back to the sport in 2008 and obtained his first LTA coaching qualification shortly after in 2010 which led to him working in tennis on a part time basis.

In late 2014, Michael gave up the majority of his interests in the businesses he founded a decade prior and began to work in tennis coaching and development on a full time basis.

Here's what followed...

2015

Michael began working with around fifty junior tennis players every week as part of a programme at Craiglockhart Tennis Centre and The Meadows. A good number of those players are still playing and now compete at club or County level.

2016

Michael founds the Advantage programme in partnership with Tennis Scotland. The purpose of the programme was to provide better opportunities to people who experience barriers of entry to tennis and promote the options available to players living with disabilities throughout Edinburgh and the Lothians.

2017

Michael began working individually with a junior wheelchair tennis player who would reach an ITF world ranking of five and represent Great Britain. This involved travelling to national and international tournaments including to France for Le Petit As which is widely regarded as a 'junior grand slam'.

2017

Michael began working at Merchiston Castle School's Tennis Academy which has consistently been ranked as the LTA's number one tennis school. His role there includes working individually with players, running squads and organising tournament opportunities.

2019

Michael founds Nursery Tennis, a programme which focuses on bringing tennis, along with fundamental movement and motor skills, directly to nurseries and pre-school education settings.

2020

Michael creates virtual tennis challenges for players in Edinburgh which raise over £800 for the Edinburgh & Lothians Health Foundation and a local food bank during the coronavirus pandemic.

2020

Lothian Disability Sport chooses Michael as their Coach of the Year 2020 in relation to his work in disability tennis and the Advantage programme.
